Definition of Suspended

1. General Definition

A suspended platform is a type of temporary work platform that is suspended from the top of a structure using wire ropes, cables, or chains, allowing it to be raised or lowered vertically. It is commonly used in construction, maintenance, and facade works on high-rise buildings. This system is also known as a gondola, cradle, or suspended scaffold.

2. Main Functions

The suspended platform serves several purposes:

  • Provides access to exterior areas of tall buildings for workers.

  • Used for facade cleaning, painting, plastering, glass installation, and inspection.

  • Allows for safe and efficient vertical movement without the need for fixed scaffolding.

  • Ideal for temporary tasks requiring access to varying heights.

3. Main Components

A standard suspended platform system includes the following components:

  • Working platform (cradle): The area where workers stand and perform tasks.

  • Hoist units: Mechanisms on each side of the platform that raise or lower it via wire ropes.

  • Wire ropes/cables: Provide the suspension and lifting mechanism.

  • Suspension mechanism: Usually fixed on the roof (e.g., suspension brackets or parapet clamps).

  • Safety locks: Automatic locking devices that prevent the platform from falling if the hoist fails.

  • Control box: Used by operators to move the platform up and down.

  • Counterweights or anchorage: Ensure the system is balanced and secure at the roof level.

  • Fall arrest systems (harnesses, lifelines): Personal protective equipment for workers.
